Military Working Dogs (MWD) were widely used before the invention of gunpowder. The first use of force known MWD is the Roman Empire. Many European countries have taken advantage of the canine senses and that about 55 a. C. and still do today.
The recommendation was made by the expeditionary forces Americans during World War that dogs be used as sentries, messengers, auxiliary patrol, and special supply missions. Upon review, The request was denied by the G-3 GHQ.
Surprisingly, the U.S. military did not begin a formal program of MWD until 1942. The first military dogs were used to help soldiers with the Guard. On 1 July 1942, the MWD first major order came from Camp Hale in Colorado. He requested more than 100 dogs to be used as a messenger, sled dogs and aroma.
Once the U.S. joined the ranks of countries in the use of military working dog program exploded. The first and MWD receiving training center was opened in Front Royal, Virginia, in August 1942. In July 1943 over 10,000 dogs had been acquired by the U.S. military. During the early stages of military MWD program had a list of over 23 races acceptable.
At the beginning of the Korean War, the working dog military program had been reduced from six sections of one. The remainder consisted of a platoon commander, platoon sergeant, veterinary, food handlers eighteen and 27 dogs. In May 1951 the first squad of the platoon MWD rest of his trip to Korea with the rest arriving in January 1952.
During the conflict Korean MWD program has expanded considerably in the utility and numbers. At the end of the war, dogs were performing the duties of guard dog and a dog scout.
The major effort concentrated on the use of dogs and handlers at any time during the war to the United States during the Vietnam War. Being used currently four branches of the U.S. military, at least 3747 dogs served in Vietnam.
Dog teams Air Force Guard were sent to Vietnam the first in July 1965 to determine how the dogs tolerate tropical conditions. The first involved the deployment of 40 handlers and 40 dogs sent from Air Force Base Lackland 120-day temporary duty. The MWD adapted well to the weather continued for the duration of the war as a valuable asset. The teams of handlers and dogs is attributed have saved over 10,000 lives.
In August 1990 the Military Working Dogs were again called into service. The U.S. military deployed 118 teams MWD would serve during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Military Working Dogs and their handlers continue to serve our country today within the borders of the United States and countries around the world. The deployments include combat and military service routine.
Since 1999, the preferred breeds are trained as military working dogs are German shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, and Retrievers. Each dog is trained to perform the tasks that best suit the strengths of the breed. For nearly 66 years MWD have been trained to serve on one or more of the following classifications: Sentry Dog, dog attack, tactical Dog, Silent Scout Dog, Dog Messenger, Casualty Dog, sled dog, or pack.
On 6 November 2000 the 106th U.S. Congress passed Resolution HR 5314, which authorized the promotion of the adoption of a retired military working dogs. The resolution describes the following details of the adoption process: a) Availability for approval; Aptitude b) for approval, e) the authorized recipient, d) Review, e) Limitations Liability for transporting dogs.
