Possibly the first motorcycle was designed and built by the German inventor Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Bad Cannstatt (since 1905 a city district of Stuttgart) in 1885 [11]. The first oil-powered vehicle was essentially a bicycle with a motor, although the inventors of the invention, called Reitwagen ( "driving your car. ") was designed as a test case for its new engine, instead of an actual vehicle prototype. [citation needed] However, if a two-wheeled vehicle with steam propulsion is considered a motorcycle, then the first one may have been the United States. One such machine was demonstrated at fairs and circuses in the eastern U.S. in 1867, built by Sylvester Howard Roper of Roxbury, Massachusetts [11].

In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the first motorcycle for sale. [12] In the first period of motorcycle history, many producers of bicycles adapted their designs to accommodate the new internal combustion engine. When engines became more powerful and designs exceeded the origins of the bicycle, the number of motorcycle producers increased.

Until the First World War, the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world was Indian, [13] [14] that produce more than 20,000 motorcycles per year. [15] In 1920, this honor went to Harley-Davidson, with their bikes up for sale by distributors in 67 countries. [16] [17] In the 1920s or early 1930, DKW took over as the largest vendor. [18] [19] [20]
After the Second World War, the BSA Group became the largest producer of motorcycles in the world, producing up to 75,000 bikes a year in the 1950s. [citation needed] The German company NSU held the position of largest manufacturer from 1955 until the 1970s. [citation needed]
NSU Sportmax streamlined motorcycle, winner of the 250 cc Grand Prix of 1955
In the 1950s, streamlining began to play an increasing role in the development of motorcycle racing and the "dustbin fairing" offered the possibility of radical changes in design motorcycle. NSU and Moto-Guzzi were at the forefront of this development both producing very radical designs well ahead of their time [21]. NSU produced the design more advanced, but after the deaths of four NSU riders in the period 1954-1956, the development was abandoned and out of Grand Prix motorcycle racing. [22] Moto-Guzzi produced competitive race machines, and in 1957 almost all of Grand Prix racing is winning by streamlined machines. [edit] The following year, 1958, full enclosure fairings were banned from racing in the FIM in the light of security concerns.
From the 1960s through the 1990s, the small two motorcycles were popular worldwide, partly as a result of work of East German motor Walter Kaaden in the 1950s [23].
Today, the motorcycle industry is mainly dominated by Japanese companies like Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha major markets, although Harley-Davidson and BMW are still popular and offer. Other major manufacturers including Piaggio group of Italy, KTM, Triumph and Ducati.
In addition to large capacity motorcycles, There is a large market of smaller capacity (less than 300 cc) motorcycles, mostly concentrated in Asian and African countries. One example is the 1958 Honda Super Cub, which became in the best-selling vehicle of all time, with its 60 millionth unit produced in April 2008. [24] Currently, the area is dominated by mostly Indian companies with Hero Honda emerging as the world's largest manufacturer of two wheelers. [25] For example, his model of brilliance that has sold over 8.5 million so far [26].

[edit] Construction
See also: Motorcycle construction and design of the motorcycle
The motorcycle construction is the engineering, manufacture and assembly of components and systems for a motorcycle which results in performance, cost and aesthetics desired by the designer. With some exceptions, the construction of modern mass-produced motorcycles has standardized on a steel frame or aluminum, telescopic forks holding the front wheel and disc brakes. Some other parts of the body, designed to any performance or cosmetic reasons can be added. A power gasoline engine typically consisting of between one and four cylinders (and less commonly, a maximum eight cylinders) coupled to a manual five-or six-speed sequential transmission drives the swingarm-mounted rear wheel by a chain, driveshaft or belt.
