
Former Hoosier Steve Alford baller left his legacy in the hands of the men's basketball program at Indiana University, where he graduated in the 1980s, but this star and former IU Hoosier native is receiving the highest recognition for his contribution to sport like Indiana, a place in the Hall of Fame Basketball in Indiana. Alford was recently selected as head of the class of 2009 Hall of Fame to the Hall of Fame, becoming the eighth winner to do in their first year of eligibility. Joining the ranks of Oscar Robertson, Rick Mount, George McGinnis, Kurt Benson, Larry Bird, Kyle Macy and Dave Colescott, this two-time All-American, 1987 Champion NCAA and 1984 Olympic gold medalist will have its shining moment in the spotlight this spring when included in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame 26 years after graduating from high school.
Alford, a New Castle, Indiana native is one of four former basketball players at the University Indiana, for inclusion in the Hall of Fame this year, leading the way, among other IU alums Wayne Radford Indianapolis (Arlington), Steve Washington Bouchier Ted Kitchel and Cass. Radford was part of championship team of 1976 IU, while Bouchier Kitchel and played for IU 1981 championship team. Other heroes of Indiana basketball between the 14 selected for inclusion in the Hall of Fame this spring is the San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, head of Merrillville and Milwaukee Bucks head coach Scot Skiles of Plymouth.
While Steve Alford is primarily in the news these days for his coaching reign at the University of New Mexico, former Hooper has been in the center of attention of the basketball world since his days as star of a big shot in New Castle Chrysler High School, where the average teenager of 37.7 points per game during his senior year and was voted Indiana's Mr. Basketball in 1983. Contributing significantly to the largest hobby Indiana, Alford attended IU next and played ball under the legendary Bobby Knight, where fans with tickets for Indiana Hoosiers hoop saw that for one of the best teams in college in the nation. Alford was the first player to be named team MVP four times while pouring in the 2438 points for the Hoosiers network of its mandate as a college player. He was also part the U.S. basketball team for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, playing alongside Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Sam Perkins and Chris Mullin to take home the gold. The last year, playing for IU Steve Alford was the most monumental win the 1987 NCAA championship game against Syracuse University, contributing 23 points for the game.
After college, Alford was selected as the 26th overall pick in the 1987 draft in the NBA, playing for the Dallas Mavericks until 1991. The legend of Indiana continued to stay in the spotlight after leaving the NBA, leading to rumors with his 1990 book Playing for Knight - My six seasons with coach Knight, a tell-all account of playing under Bobby Knight at the university and in the Olympic basketball team. Since then, the phenomenal basketball player has led to the opposite side court, training at Manchester College, Missouri State and Iowa before taking the reins of New Mexico in 2007. Alford is currently in its second year as coach of the Lobos, and his induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is the icing on the cake for his incredible career.
