The multi-player "band" concept of Rock Band must have made a significant dent in the market Guitar Hero, since it has been fully integrated into Guitar Hero 4. Although many details of Guitar Hero 4 remain secret, enough has been released or escaped to have a good idea of what's coming. In what appears to be a clear case of "Me too, but better" GH4 set-up will include a drum kit and microphone.
The drums of Guitar Hero will be a clear improvement over the original design of the whole band, but will be tougher, a lot more realistic and (most importantly?) quieter. (To be fair, the word is Rock Band has improved the durability and peace of his game this year.)

This year Guitar Hero also enable the "bands" to use the registration system made his original music and free the entire community that voted. Data game for Rock Band 2 are not very well known yet, so it will be interesting to see if they try to rest on their laurels or take it up another notch again.

For the players, the decision between the games are going to be very difficult and I highly recommend taking a decision based on past experience, even as recently as last year. Things change so fast.

I truly believe that, other than a couple of features, the games will be very similar. The lists are very strong with multiple instances of the same artist with a different famous song in both lists. I think it's only going to come to make a choice based on their own preferences and desires.

Conclusion

The real beneficiary of all this one-upmanship and competition is the consumer. Work harder to overcome the business and offer others in pursuit of their entertainment dollar, the better it is for us all. So in the end game does not really matter who sells more copies or winning the most awards. The real winners will be you and me, the players and consumers worldwide.
