The day has vanished from our collective national consciousness. In a couple of weeks will be sixty-six years since the events of that terrible morning in Hawaii. More than six decades of time have conspired to reduce the national memory of what happened that day. There will be a Memorial Day all the coverage from Fox News or CNN. Now, only the books of history or a program on the Discovery Channel will talk about the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan on 7 December 1941.
These same history books report that 350 Japanese planes launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of 7 December 1941. The Japanese attack was intended to destroy United States Pacific Fleet. The attack damaged two U.S. warships Marina, two destroyers and 188 United States Aviation. Damaged warships States States included three cruisers, a destroyer, and six warships. Thousands of innocent people were killed or wounded.
The fact is that America was a country divided prior to 7 December 1941. Almost half of the nation wanted to avoid what would become known as the Second World War. The other half of the country, the war as inevitable and wanted to enter. That all changed at 7:48 am, Hawaii in what later became known as Pearl Harbor Day. The collective anger at the surprise attack Japan unify the American public. December 7, 1941, to be called "a day that Live in infamy" in a speech the next day by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who declared war on Japan and announced the U.S. entry into World War II.
It was the national collective anger in Japan, which constitute the basis for the U.S. response would lead to victory in the Battle of Midway the following June, and finally, total destruction of the Empire Japanese, only four years later.
In retrospect, there are real parallels between 7 December 1941 and September 11, 2001. In 1941, the opinion country's public was evenly divided on the benefits of participating in the growing international crisis that would soon become World War II. This view was divided in 1941 similar to almost identical division in opinion that would make the 2000 presidential election the closest in U.S. history. Both surprise attacks against the United States act to unify America's collective will and channel the energy of a tough response. Moreover, in both cases, more 2000 Americans lost their lives and the aircraft was used as an instrument of the tragedy. Moreover, both caught by surprise attacks U.S. security outside the danger that was about to happen.
The U.S. response to the attack on Pearl Harbor would destroy the Japanese empire and bring victory in World War II. The American response to the events of 9/11/2001, would result in the liberation of Afghanistan from the Taliban and the war in Iraq. Ultimately, the story judge whether George W. Bush has used his mandate for war to the American people, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt used his.
On 7 December 2007 at 7:48 Hawaii time, which is exactly sixty six years to the time of day that changed the world. It would be a morning of horror, on a day otherwise beautiful in a tropical paradise. The U.S. Navy would receive a devastating blow, but temporary. More than 2300 people tragically lost their lives, while more than a thousand people would be wounded during the shelling and air assault. However, out of the darkness of the morning in Hawaii, eventually there would come a new dawn in the final success of the Second World War and the Allied victory.
We have ceremonies to honor the loss of innocent people who went to work and never returned on 9/11/2001. The memories of that terrible morning, are engraved in our memory. A difference of 11 September 2001, many of us were not alive to remember the attack from Japan to the U.S. in the morning of 7 December 1941. However, understanding the horror of 9 / 11 should give us a unique relationship with the innocent men and women who lost their lives in the surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor than sixty days six years ago.
In fact, a regular passage of time does not stop us remember the tragic events December 7, 1941. It is for us to remember that day and the lives lost defending America. It is up to us to ensure that the memory that day will live in infamy.
